One of the weaknesses of the Tokyo underground scene's strictly DiY nature is that bands themselves are often not the best judge of their own material, as evidenced by Nisennenmondai's consistent inability to produce an album that matches the brilliance of their live performances. This,
Idea Of A Joke's second single, is a big step on from their debut on their own Less Than TV records label, and it's tempting to conclude that the input they would have got from working with an outside producer on a CD for someone else's label has worked to their benefit. It sounds much richer and freer than before, with opening track
Meltdown rocking with just the right mixture of sophistication and ferocity. The rest of the EP is punk rock that's heavy, dirty, and funky to exactly the right degree. Getting a good producer is no easy task, with producers tending to follow the money, and money being the sole preserve of major labels, but this CD definitely shows to benefits for any bands willing to seek one out.
