"Pshychic"  Buffalo Daughter  Release date: 2003  Label: V2 Records Japan

First the statistics: Five tracks, fifty-one minutes, that's an average of just over ten minutes per song although with a closing track in excess of twenty minutes that leaves the remaining four sharing an average of a mere seven minutes and forty-six seconds each. Bearing in mind that most of this album is instrumental you might be forgiven for taking that strange sound you can hear over the intro to "Pshychic A-Go-Go" as a warning siren.

Of course, if you get as far as that then you're probably already hopping around your room with your eyes closed, your arms outstretched and spinning in circles tripping on pure aural ecstasy. You see "Pshychic" (pronounced "shy-kick"), Buffalo Daughter's seven millionth album including appearances on compilations, is quite special. Remarking on a Buffalo Daughter TV appearance recently, the presenter noted sagely that there are no longer boundaries between electronic music and rock (no shit, Sherlock!) which was a pretty inane thing to say but accurately pinpoints their position in the music world. Unlike, say, Stereolab, "Pshychic" actually takes that whole repetitive, minimalist psychedelic thing and makes you want to dance like a joyously blithering hippy idiot. More Neu Order! than Neu!, the best thing about these songs is that despite their absurd lengths the album actually feels short. You listen to the whole eleven minutes of opening track "Cyclic" and the only thing stopping you from skipping right back to the start is that you can't wait to hear what happens next.

Elsewhere "S.O.I.D." sees the ethereal shadow of the 'Lab lurking with intent but is none the worse for that thanks to the velvet melodic allure of Yumiko and suGar's harmonising. "303 Live" (the long one) takes a predictably long time to get going but brings the album to a spectacular conclusion that leaves you gasping for more. I just hope that Supercar are listening to this because someone just raised the bar on the whole genre several notches. -Ian Martin, Jan.22.04
