"Second EP" Alan Smithee Release date: 2004 Label: Studio Demo
|
The mixture of heavy noisian guitars and chiming mellow bits that makes up much of this EP could make this band just another bunch of Mogwai copyists, but Alan Smithee are way beyond that. They flesh out the sound with something that sounds like jazz at times, but don't be scared, it's okay, really it is. There's a consistent groove running through each of these four tracks and the dubby bass pushes it more into PiL territory. The guitars don't dwell on minor chords the way some of their peers do, the occasional use of samples adds texture, and most importantly, they make sure that every instrument has someting interesting to do in every track. -Ian Martin, Jan.19.05
