"What You Gonna Do?"  The City Lights  Release date: 2004
Label: Ivy League/Slanted Recordings

Japanese translation

For whatever other faults it may have, this latest offering by Australia's latest young upstarts, The City Lights, is a clinic in post-millenial rock&roll song structure. Kicking right in with the chorus, never letting any hook outstay its welcome before cycling through to the next one, some nice "yeah yeah yeah" bits in there. The harmonies are kind of Menswear sucky but these guys have a winning glint in their eyes.

There's more (and less calculated) fun, however, to be had on the B-sides, with the "ooh la la la" backing vocals and Stonesy piano on "She Don't Even Know My Name" being a particular highlight. "Communist Radio" is about one and a half minutes long, which is good, and "Wild Man" is very silly and highly enjoyable in a Zutons/Troggs/Cramps kind of way. -Ian Martin, May.15.04
