The Glam are too good to be languishing in unsigned Tokyo indie obscurity. To call them "perfectly formed" wouldn't get close to describing what makes them so great since the glorious imperfections are equally as important a part of their brilliance. The way that lunatic frontwoman/guitarist Misaki-C's voice wavers uncomfortably and deceptively before suddenly launching into Kate Bush-style vocal acrobatics, the way bass player Tomonii and drummer Kyoujyu are pounding out disco rhythms one second, and ripping their instruments to shreds the next. It all makes The Glam one of the most surprising bands I've come across on the Tokyo toilet circuit.
This CD is really only a taster for the full live glory, but for all that it's certainly a delicious taster. "U'r My Friend" is probably the closest thing they have to a straightforward rock song, coming over all chiming 4AD guitars, Pixies-type quiet/loud dynamics and boasting some decidedly non-embarrassing English lyrics (yay!) It's backed with a sharp, angular instrumental B-side complete with fire-breathing staccato guitars and occasional shrieking. If you want to get your hands on this CD then I'd recommend hassling the band directly. Their homepage is www.ismusic.ne.jp/theglam/, their show at Koenji UFO Club on June 14th is also a must-see. -Ian Martin, May.15.04
