"Walk Idiot Walk"  The Hives  Release date: 2004  Label: No Fun/Polydor

Totally fucking awesome return to the fray from Sweden's finest. This is a perfect, super-economical, condensation of everything that rock and roll music in the early 21st Century should sound like: The sharp stabs of guitar, the insistent krautpunk beat, the totally-fucking-wired, screaming vocals, the heart-surge chord change that kicks in where the chorus should be. Everything in its place, and not a sliver of fat on it.

The b-sides, "Genepool Convulsions" and "Keel-hauling Class Of '89" are rougher, dirtier takes on the same pattern. The album will probably get a pasting in the press, but nothing can take this moment of genius away from them. -Ian Martin, July.16.04
