Kama Boiler look like At The Drive-In and sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd. I don't know how many bands in Tokyo can claim that but even a generous estimate would put the figure at, ooh, less than a dozen. They attack first track "Mimitabu" with a barrage of skilfully deployed Southern-fried trailer trash guitars and hit all the right feelgood spots without ever slipping into parody. The other two tracks bounce along in a more poppy vein, the production and musicianship are excellent across all three and they mercifully resist the temptation to sacrifice their inherent Japaneseness at the altar of pointless and incomprehensible English lyrics.
"Demo Wasureteta" will set you back 500 of your Japanese yen and is available from the band either at their gig or through their web site http://www.sound.jp/bugler/ -Ian Martin, Apr.03.04
