"Byrds Turn To Stone"  Shack  Release date: 2003  Label: North Country

Not afraid of wearing their influences on their sleeves are they, these Liverpool bands? So, umm... yeah, it sounds like The Byrds and it's probably a fair bet that these guys have heard one or two songs by The Stone Roses. Fortunately it's quite lovely and not anywhere near as sickening as similar-sounding efforts by The Stands thanks largely to the warmth and world-weary sincerity of Mick Head's voice and the intimate, in-the-room-with-you production.

B-side "Not Afraid Of Loving You", written by brother-in-the-shadows John Head sounds like "Coming Back To Me" by Jefferson Airplane and is charming except for being more than six tedious minutes long. Third track "As Long As I've Got You" is fine, there's nothing wrong with it, how does it go again? Oh, I've forgotten. -Ian Martin, Nov.11.04
