"Melting On Mon Do"  Shoot My Disco  Release date: 2004  Label: Moisture Records (CD/R)

Shoot My Disco are not about being cool. They are about knocking together the shiniest new wave guitar riffs, the fastest tag-team vocals, and just generally being as insanely, danceably optimistic as possible. They sit in direct opposition to both the try-hard posturing of hip-hop, and the maudlin pretentiousnessof indie, but not for long, because they're off to a party and they've got more fun things to worry about right now.

The alarmingly titled "Brown Circle" starts things off with some fine new wave yelps, and "Gururi Menthol" moves things up a gear quoting liberally from Suzuki Ami/TM Network's "Be Together" before diving into a neat New Order bassline. "Hanichimura" drifts a little into cheesy arms-in-the-air near-reggae but not at the expense of tunes or fun. Closing track, "Of Love", is totally ridiculous and also totally brilliant. In the right hands, this could be a massive hit for The Spice Girls, but in the hands of Shoot My Disco it is a multi-coloured anti-hip cluster bomb of hook after hook after hook, flying at you from every conceivable angle and shattering your indie-cred inhibitions like plates at a Greek wedding. -Ian Martin, Nov.14.04
